Why Is Breakfast Important?

Breakfast is important because in the morning your body is starved for nutrients and energy, since you often don’t eat while you’re asleep :), and breakfast is your first opportunity to give your body the fuel it needs to operate. If you start out the gate sluggish, chances are your entire day will be spent trying to get caught up through other, less effective, means such as coffee or sugar.

To those looking to cut some calories by skipping breakfast, it’s a mistake! Studies have shown that skipping breakfast lowers your overall metabolism and reduces your body’s ability to consume fuel. They have also shown that skipping breakfast makes you more likely to overeat during lunch. Do not skip breakfast as a means of losing weight because it does not work.

So, if breakfast is important, what should you be eating? You will want to consume complex carbohydrates, protein, and fiber in your breakfast. Complex carbohydrates burn much slower and provide you energy throughout your morning, whereas simple carbohydrates are quickly converted into sugar and burned much too quickly (this is also why you should avoid sugary cereals, syrups, and other sugary products early in the morning - you don’t want to start your day with a sugar rush and crash before lunch). For protein, you should look for low fat meats, eggs, or beans. Skip the high fat stuff such as ham or bacon, the additional fat won’t be good for you. Lastly, fiber is always a good thing and it comes in abundance with complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread but you can also get it in some vegetables and fruits.

Remember, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
