Weekly Roundup: Childhood Obesity, Breastmilk & Book Reviews

Lazy Man has some good tips for dealing with childhood obesity, here’s one: “Introduce your children to a wide variety of foods, including lots of fruits and vegetables. Consuming lots of fresh produce is a great way to promote healthy eating, and giving your kids variety increases the chances of them finding produce that they truly enjoy eating. A varied diet also has the benefit of a wide variety of nutrients, which is essential to healthy development.”

Thankfully, Ben and Jerry said no to breast milk in ice cream. PETA is craaaazy.

Thinking about getting a copy of Foods That Help You Lose Weight By Neal Barnard, Weight Ladder does a good review of the book.

Weekly Roundup

I spent this past weekend at Ocean City, MD and didn’t get a chance to put up the roundup before I left. I am happy to report that I have returned, sans a sun burn, and am here with this week’s goodies. As an added bonus (for us, not really for you), my wife and I bought brand new bikes last week so we’ll be doing some biking around town!

Weekly Roundup

I had no idea there was an Overeaters Anonymous but it’s great that such an organization exists, this week at Fat Man Unleashed there is a guest post by Jenny Clark about the group. She gives us an inside look at Overeaters Anonymous meetings.

Can walking prevent a common cold? I’m surprised to find out that it might. Why? You’ll have to read to find out. :)

NCN is on schedule, losing a pound a week.

Kevin at Weight Ladder reviews the South Beach Diet Supercharged. I’m not one for diets but if you are and have considered this diet plan, check out his thoughts on the book describing it.

Roundup: My First Round of “Real” Golf

A few weeks ago I decided I’d like to pick up golf. Since then I’ve been practicing on my back deck hitting balls into a net from my little path of artificial turf heaven. My father had given me his old set of clubs, which were in great condition, and so I pretty started up on the habit on the cheap. Well today I played my first round of “real” golf at Gunpowder Falls Golf Course in Kingsville, MD, a little par-64 3100+ yard executive golf course. It was a great afternoon for it though the winds were a bit blustery. I have to say that my afternoon wasn’t bad considering we didn’t have a chance to warm up and I was able to hit one par-4 for par and only get bogey and double bogey on all but another four or five holes (which max’d out at double-par). It was definitely a fun afternoon and fed my desire to keep playing and improving.

This week, the Fitness Health Network offered up a nice helping of health/fitness posts:

  • Weight Loss Journal featured a guest post that discussed six ways to beat fatigue.
  • Obviously given the choice between fresh and canned or frozen fruits and veggies, you go for the fresh because of flavor. However, if you are choosing between frozen and canned, go with frozen because canned veggies have been shown the least nutritional value. I didn’t know that!
  • Need some ideas about creating a food budget? NCN shares some of his tips and none of them have to do with $$$.
  • When you are working towards a goal, occasionally you get knocked off track. Well Israel at Fat Man Unleashed has been knocked off the last few weeks and posts this weight loss confession. Stuff happens, things don’t always go as you plan, but it’s how you respond and recover that decides how dedicated you are.
  • Lazy Man offers up six cancer-fighting superfoods I didn’t know where cancer-fighting superfoods. Oddly enough, I eat all of them, so double win for me! :)

100 Pushups Update: Week One Done, Elbow Issues

Week one has been a success though my elbow continues to make a clicking noise. I’ve been more cognizant of the way I’ve been holding the bar at Body Pump during the leg track, when I believe I hurt my elbow three weeks ago, and haven’t experienced as much soreness as last week. The clicking is a bit disconcerting but we’ll see if it translates into pain, so far it hasn’t.

So, how have my friends in the Fitness Health Network been faring this week?

Weight Ladder has a review of Bob Harper’s Are You Ready. Bob was one of the trainers on The Biggest Loser and Kevin loved it. Check out his review.

NCN has joined the 100 pushups craze and noted that he’s been doing his pushups wrong… so he retested himself and restarted the process.

Lazy Man reviewed his health this week and took down some measurements.

And last but not least, Fat Man Unleashed’s Dr. Kal took a look at some of the 125 Best Foods for Men from the June 2008 issue of Men’s Health.

5 Vegetarian Proteins & Roundup

I mentioned earlier that my wife and I might go vegetarian for a week and so I began researching some vegetarian sources of protein. As it turns out, there are plenty of proteins out there from non-meat sources so I figured I’d find five that could be our staples. The five are:

  • Beans
  • Tofu
  • Peanut Butter
  • Lentils
  • Broccoli

This whole vegetarian thing is still in its nascent stages so don’t have any high expectations yet. :)

As for this week in the fitness blogosphere:

Healthy Roundup

On Thursday after my Body Pump class, I’m pretty sure I had some leftovers that were a little past their prime. I’m pretty sure because my stomach has been pretty upset at me for the last five days and I haven’t had usual youthful energy. Regardless, it’s certainly not anything as bad as Kevin rupturing his peroneus longus tendon in a volleyball game. It’s nothing grisly, just an unfortunate accident. It reminds me of a friend of mine who snapped both is tibia and fibula rounding third in a kickball game. Yikes. We wish you a speedy recovery man.

NCN gave us an update on his 6th day without soda.

Fat Man Unleased shares a review of Weight View with us.

And last but not least, Lazy Man laments how hotels are horrible for fitness.

On an unrelated note, I’m in the process of securing a Wii Fit, which I hear is all the rage. Looks pretty cool from this 2007 E3 conference video:

Weekly Roundup

Weight Ladder offers his thoughts on the American Heart Association’s No Fad Diet book while Lazy Man tricked himself into going to the gym!

Israel of Fat Man Unleashed is starting a new cartoon series with an inaugural toon about the lemon diet, which sounds horrible.

Enjoy the week and please have a save and pleasant Memorial Day weekend!
