Four Unexpected Food Facts
Life is about expecting the unexpected right? Well, what if you never learn those unexpected things? Then what!? Well, luckily today I saw an article about four unexpected food facts that really piqued my interested. They involve health benefits and foods and they are:
- Mushrooms make vitamin D in sunlight.
- Orange tomatoes may be healthier than red ones.
- Consuming eggs regularly does not boost cardiovascular risk.
- Crush garlic, then wait 10 minutes before cooking, to maximize health benefits.
The consuming egg one I already knew, that you can consume about an egg a day and still be fine as long as you don’t consume much more cholesterol from other sources. The other three I didn’t know. In fact, I wouldn’t have thought mushrooms would be chock full of vitamin D if exposed to sunlight – just set them out in the sun, even after they’ve been picked, gill-side up and you can get a whole bunch of vitamin D.
The orange tomatoes fact is also very unexpected because, as the article elaborates on, we usually associate rich color with antioxidants. Well the orange tomatoes, called a Tangerine, are packed with lycopene but aren’t usually available in stores.
Lastly, crushed garlic “releases an enzyme, alliinase, that catalyzes the formation of allicin, which then breaks down to form a variety of heart-healthy organosulfur compounds. So crushed or chopped garlic, they reported, was potentially better for cardiac health than whole cloves.”
Now you know! Crush your garlic, let your mushrooms sit in the sun, and eggs are good for you again!
