Diet Coke Drops Sodium Benzoate (E211)
One of the concerns about Coca Cola’s Diet Coke was that it contained an additive called sodium benzoate, known as E211. Sodium Benzoate is used to stop carbonated beverages from going mouldy but has been linked to damaging DNA and hyperactivity in children. Sodium benzoate is not a human-created chemical, it occurs naturally in some fruits, except the quantity and concentrations used in soda are simply much higher.
…research by Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology at Sheffield University, found that the additive could switch off parts of DNA, the genetic code in the cells of living creatures, that could be linked to cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease. (Source: DailyMail.Co.Uk)
