Weekly Roundup: FullBars, Squats, and a Book Review
Israel received a box of FullBars, a product created by Dr. Michael Snyder. It’s designed to make you feel full and Israel says it does a great job of doing just that.
Lazy Man shares the right way to do squats. “Squats are perhaps one of the most misunderstood strength training exercises. They can be very beneficial if done properly, but there are a lot of misconceptions out there. If you’re not doings squats the right way, you can risk painful injury and you won’t be getting the full benefit of the exercise. Here are some tips on how to make sure you are doing squats the right way.”
Weight Ladder reviews Eating for Life By Bill Phillips. “This book made Bob Phillips a household name and we thought it was a good idea to revisit this book and see how it compares to the latest diet books on the market.”
Finally, Mac writes a poignant post “Why Am I Fat?” with a heck of an opening line -
In a nutshell, I’m fat because it’s easier to be fat than it is to be a healthy weight.
Weekly Roundup
I spent this past weekend at Ocean City, MD and didn’t get a chance to put up the roundup before I left. I am happy to report that I have returned, sans a sun burn, and am here with this week’s goodies. As an added bonus (for us, not really for you), my wife and I bought brand new bikes last week so we’ll be doing some biking around town!
- NCN talks about how today will be a great day at the gym.
- Weight Ladder shares four tips on how to avoid hitting the exercise wall.
- Lazy Man shares with us the baby food diet… hmmm I don’t know about that one.
- Fat Man Unleashed has a guest post from Katie, an ACE Certified Personal Trainer, called A Tip is Just a Tip, but a Before and After is My Life.
Roundup: Raw Diets? Fat Animals?
There’s a great post at Fat Man Unleashed: Why are we fatter than the animals at the zoo!? Part of the reason is that “cooking food makes us fat and unhealthy is that heating a food above 118 F destroys its precious enzymes.” I’ve been reading a lot about raw diets and how good they are for you and while I’m not ready to try it, it’s a compelling argument.
Lazy Man took a look at some more superfoods, this time the ones that help prevent lung disease.
Kevin at WeightLadder gave FullBar a try. “The idea behind the Fullbar is to provide a healthy and delicious bar when eaten with a glass of water fills your stomach and provides the felling of of being full.”
NCN is considering a new gym membership. “My old membership expired a few months ago, and I haven’t felt like renewing it. But, now that I’m in the mood to workout, I think I’m going to join a new place. They have an indoor walking track and an indoor pool, for year-round swimming. I think I’d enjoy swimming a few laps, instead of pounding away on the treadmill.” I think swimming is a great cardio workout, I should really swim more often than I do (which is never).
Weekly Roundup: Dumbells, Thin Thinking & Unreal Biceps
Lazy Man reviews Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells, one of those “dumbbell systems” where you have one set and multiple weight configurations.
Fat Man Unleased has an unreal bicep routine that’ll teach you how to build the ultimate bicep. The image is chilling but the routine seems straightforward and effective.
Kevin at Weight Ladder shares the Beck Diet, which can teach your brain to think like a thin person.
NCN is looking for the best way to cook chicken.
Weekly Roundup
Much like Lazy Man, I’m a huge fan of edamame and am surprised to hear that soy products may lower sperm count. Darn darn darn, I need my spermies!
Kevin at Weight Ladder has some good tips for making lifestyle changes.
Israel asks an interesting question, why is it that we’re fatter than animals at the zoo? Rather than being penned up in cages, I think we are penned up in offices and cubicles.
NCN talks about building a food budget – establishing daily caloric intake.
Weekly Roundup
I had no idea there was an Overeaters Anonymous but it’s great that such an organization exists, this week at Fat Man Unleashed there is a guest post by Jenny Clark about the group. She gives us an inside look at Overeaters Anonymous meetings.
Can walking prevent a common cold? I’m surprised to find out that it might. Why? You’ll have to read to find out.
NCN is on schedule, losing a pound a week.
Kevin at Weight Ladder reviews the South Beach Diet Supercharged. I’m not one for diets but if you are and have considered this diet plan, check out his thoughts on the book describing it.
Roundup: My First Round of “Real” Golf
A few weeks ago I decided I’d like to pick up golf. Since then I’ve been practicing on my back deck hitting balls into a net from my little path of artificial turf heaven. My father had given me his old set of clubs, which were in great condition, and so I pretty started up on the habit on the cheap. Well today I played my first round of “real” golf at Gunpowder Falls Golf Course in Kingsville, MD, a little par-64 3100+ yard executive golf course. It was a great afternoon for it though the winds were a bit blustery. I have to say that my afternoon wasn’t bad considering we didn’t have a chance to warm up and I was able to hit one par-4 for par and only get bogey and double bogey on all but another four or five holes (which max’d out at double-par). It was definitely a fun afternoon and fed my desire to keep playing and improving.
This week, the Fitness Health Network offered up a nice helping of health/fitness posts:
- Weight Loss Journal featured a guest post that discussed six ways to beat fatigue.
- Obviously given the choice between fresh and canned or frozen fruits and veggies, you go for the fresh because of flavor. However, if you are choosing between frozen and canned, go with frozen because canned veggies have been shown the least nutritional value. I didn’t know that!
- Need some ideas about creating a food budget? NCN shares some of his tips and none of them have to do with $$$.
- When you are working towards a goal, occasionally you get knocked off track. Well Israel at Fat Man Unleashed has been knocked off the last few weeks and posts this weight loss confession. Stuff happens, things don’t always go as you plan, but it’s how you respond and recover that decides how dedicated you are.
- Lazy Man offers up six cancer-fighting superfoods I didn’t know where cancer-fighting superfoods. Oddly enough, I eat all of them, so double win for me!
100 Pushups Update: Week One Done, Elbow Issues
Week one has been a success though my elbow continues to make a clicking noise. I’ve been more cognizant of the way I’ve been holding the bar at Body Pump during the leg track, when I believe I hurt my elbow three weeks ago, and haven’t experienced as much soreness as last week. The clicking is a bit disconcerting but we’ll see if it translates into pain, so far it hasn’t.
So, how have my friends in the Fitness Health Network been faring this week?
Weight Ladder has a review of Bob Harper’s Are You Ready. Bob was one of the trainers on The Biggest Loser and Kevin loved it. Check out his review.
NCN has joined the 100 pushups craze and noted that he’s been doing his pushups wrong… so he retested himself and restarted the process.
Lazy Man reviewed his health this week and took down some measurements.
And last but not least, Fat Man Unleashed’s Dr. Kal took a look at some of the 125 Best Foods for Men from the June 2008 issue of Men’s Health.
Weekly Roundup: Diets & Pushups Are Popular
The man who told me about 100 pushups in the first place is also joining the 100 push up challenge. A few others are joining the craze as well, we’ll all be ripped in six weeks.
Elsewhere in the fitness world, there’s been a deluge of posts about diets. Fat Man Unleased unleashed a post on the 4 physical laws of dieting while Lazy Man was concerned about the safety and effectiveness of diet pills. Not to be outdone, Weight Ladder gave 3 tips on how to avoid diet stress.
Finally, NCN shares a recent trip to the dentist and some basic dental hygiene tips.
Roundup: Great Accomplishments
Props to Kevin at Weight Ladder, he’s dropped 46 pounds in 6 weeks and over 7 this week.
Lazy Man has an anonymous guest poster this week that doomed all diets to failure. “Pretty much every diet fails at some point or other. Yes, it’s true – diets are doomed. No matter how well-designed the diet is, almost every person on the diet will end up cheating at some point.” That’s how it starts.
Need a way to make squats more fun and memorable? Israel’s guest poster, Josh Morrow, gives two ideas.
I wrote about how Diet Coke is going to drop Sodium Benzoate, but that’s not soon enough for NCN, who dropped all diet sodas.
